The night on which the haunting began, Sariel found a melody lurking in his head that he's trying to pick out on the piano, a haunting refrain that he finds he simply has to commit to the page, or at least to memory... It's as if he's possessed by this melody, and he finds himself trying to put words to it, words inspired by the M.R. James stories he was reading earlier in the evening. He even switches on a digital recorder for a rough cut of the song -
And then the recorder emits a loud crackle of static and the lights around him flicker.
"All right... I know I was inspired by haunting events, but this is ridiculous," he murmurs. And then, without him touching it, the music manuscript book on the piano stand slides off into his lap...
