Sometimes it seems like Sans wasn't always like this. It's hard for him to be sure. It's not like Sans would admit to being lazier and lazier, except as a 'sure, whatever you say, bro,' kind of thing. And Papyrus was so much younger, and didn't notice all the things he notices now. Maybe he just didn't notice the signs because he didn't know to look for them. Or maybe Sans hid it better when they were younger.
