It's good that Jamie doesn't ask those questions. Sora's not sure if he could bring himself to answer. There's too much conflict inside of him: part of him saying it doesn't know the answers, part of him saying it knows but doesn't want to share, part of him saying it can't share even though he really does want to. And a question of his own bubbles up to the surface, dissipating into thin air before it reaches his lips: so which part is really me?
But everything feels calmer with the proximity of someone else, and he finds himself leaning into Jamie's touch, relaxing somewhat, turning his face to rest his forehead against the other boy's temple.
"Yeah." It's a response breathed out more than spoken or whispered, and he closes his eyes to fight off more tears. "Why..." He takes in a breath then, and lifts his head to meet Jamie's eyes.
"You were there when I opened the door."
There's curiosity in his tone, so it could be taken as an actual question. And yet it's also Sora stating what he's just realized, and feeling grateful for it, relieved. It carries in it a lot of emotion, and unlike the previous two words he'd spoken that were light, mere wisps, there and gone again... these ones lay heavy in the air. They're solid, and noteworthy.
He'd been headed to Jamie's room anyway, but somehow immediately seeing him just upon opening the door, when he'd been looking for him and wanting to see him, desperate to make sure he was okay, that he was there. Seeing Jamie's face just like that had not only been reassurance that everything was (relatively) normal, that the people Sora cared about were safe and right where he'd left them... It also felt like a gift.
And there may be a tear or two welling up again, but at least now he's smiling.
