"I didn't want to scare you, but at least this way we can be prepared," Finnick says, still trying to express the weight of this and how terrified he is without actually having to say it. He's not much in the way of prideful, but he doesn't like showing weakness, and telling someone you're scared of them certainly counts as weakness.
