“Try to make it look like it's all somehow getting better, 'Cause I know how to play it pretty good against the measure. Everyone started out a little insane, But we learn pretty quick how to fake it for the game.” ☆PLAY ALONG ![]() Hype Week is less an official label event, and more something that the media has created in response to a particularly odd situation. Pride and Virgo appear to be functioning in unison - launching separate world tours on practically the same date, launching vast quantities of new material and media events, and making a point of never mentioning or acknowledging the actions of the other. Could this be some kind of collaborative event? A viral marketing campaign? No one is really sure, but the local economy is happy to capitalize on it in order to make it as big of a city-wide ordeal as possible. For musicians, this means all kinds of event that they have to attend and cooperate with - everything from photo shoots, to signing, to music video premiers. For rescuers, this means one last opportunity to track down those still trapped before they are whisked away on a world spanning journey. Events that will be happening: ► NEW SINGLES: Hot new singles are getting released by bands all over the place. While actual concerts and performances are not actually happening much during the hype period, each band is probably releasing at least one new single and hyping it all to hell with one song performances here and there on TV and the like. You can have fun defining that single for your band, or leave it ambiguous! Up to you. ► PANELS AND INTERVIEWS: Musicians will get carted all over to various talk shows and public question panel events - a lot of questions will be asked about the World Tour and its specifics, of which the musicians themselves seem to know very little. This goes for the veterans as much as it does the fledglings. ► MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERS: In which a bunch of fancy music people go to fancy theaters and watch all the new music videos for the new singles, and then write articles about this. This is also something you are welcome to create specifics for. ► SIGNINGS AND PUBLIC APPEARANCES: While many of the veterans and doing things like autobiographical books signings and what not, the newer musicians are more likely to just be signing millions of World Tour specific posters and CD releases. Its quite likely that they are going to be totally run down after all these appearances and preparations - try to stay awake at the table! ► WORLD TOUR PREMIER: This will be covered in a second log a few days from now. For now, the musicians are just being prepped for a music festival to end all music festivals, that will start May 5th and cover the entire weekend. They've been practicing rigorously all month - they'll have to hope they have the stamina to make it to the actual performance. All the while, Gold and Silver have been mysteriously absent. Silver has been here and there, handing out supplies and necessary tech, but guidance for rescuers has been minimal. Gold hasn't been seen at all. Part way into the week, at least, Shep will return with a new batch of rescuers, just in time for the premier! New musicians and band combinations will slowly be announced over this week as well, with some of them being saved for the premier festival itself. That is, any OOC changes made to bands and last minute new members are going to get announced like they are big exciting unveilings, because spin doctoring is what the labels do! ☆SINGULARITY Everyone hearing the new singles will be able to tell that they seem especially ear wormy - extra hip, extra catchy, like the best examples of each bands radio popularity. Rescuers in particular, though, will notice something sort of strange about them. It's more than just song being catchy. People who are not musicians themselves will find themselves being unnaturally charmed by them, as if each time they hear these singles they are being slowly brainwashed into becoming more and more fixated on the artists performing.Of course, this can be stopped by just not listening to them for a few days, but it's hard to avoid when pretty much every public location has been playing these singles non stop. Along with this effect, there are some particulars: ► PREDATOR DREAMS: The Pride band Predator is the same as the others, in that it has a particularly intrusive single that's just been introduced. There is one difference. It may take a while to notice, but it can be noted that one starts to feel somewhat tired and dazed after listening to it repeatedly, like they are somehow drained. The single is called The Spaces In Between and it is somewhat unusual that Cass, the member who usually primarily focuses on instrumentals and back up singing, is now performing lead. If your character hears this song several times, they may suffer some weird DREAMS - especially if they received a dose of Gold's magic powder in the Better To Pretend event. If you'd like to receive a dream, please write "DREAM PLEASE" in your subject line, along with a written section describing an instance of your character having regular dreams that I can manipulate. Anywhere else and I might miss it. ► ESCAPED MUSICIANS: Musicians that have escaped and are now in hiding will find themselves particularly mentally manipulated by the singles released by their home label. They will find their minds unusually filled with thoughts of returning to their labels, as well as increased paranoia about being caught. Any remaining programming will be particularly triggered and brought to the surface. They'll be able to push it down with self control and assistance from other characters, but the thoughts will become more invasive the more they listen to it. “'Cause everybody's so scared, We don't wanna go there. We don't wanna make a move, We got all our lives to lose. Screaming in the dark while we just play our part out. I play along, Like I don't know what's going on.” |
Greg Universe - Dream pls
Once the buzz kicks into high gear and the media buzz kicks in anyone can see it, clear as day. Mr. Universe, lead and bassist for Defying Atmosphere, has completely changed.
A - All Go For Launch - Open to bandmates
When it's time to perform, he sets down his demands for how this show's going to go; there's none of his usual collaborative friendliness. He's going to take center stage for this one. If you've got a problem with that, you'll have to take it up with him after the show, because he's not budging.
"We're blind and eager
Avarice will set us back to blank
Those who wager all will have to name a reason
If you can't let go, you will end up empty handed
If you can't control, you'll live your life in vain
Who decides about my time to come?
Who is able to break through the circle of life and doom?
Don't look back
Keep on track to break the curse
Take the chance
Design your universe"
And besides, why would you complain? The audience positively eats up ever moment he's under the spotlight. He is the star, and their attention makes him shine. Heck, if everyone didn't know it was the stage lights, you might think he was glowing all by himself.
B - Progress vs. Pettiness - Open to Pride and Virgo Musicians
Interviewers quickly take note, needling eagerly for tidbits and quotes. He slouches in chairs, charming and disheveled as ever, but his hands are always tense, eyes sharp. Always smirking.
"I'm starting to take my career more seriously, now. You know?" He spreads his hands. "You ever think about how vast the cosmos really is? Big and wide enough for literally anything to be possible. But the only way you'll ever find what you want is to take it," his hands clench for emphasis, grin sharpening, "one star at a time. You can't stop, not for one second, until the whole universe is yours."
All blurbs and interviews are full of metaphors and decrees of this nature. How invigorating, say the papers, how inspiring! What drive, what determination!
He never brings up his bandmates, or any fellow musicians at all. Questions about them are shrugged off as quickly as possible, and mentions of Pride are met with a mocking grin, directed right to the camera. He's challenging you.
C - Galaxy Detour - Open to All
If one thing remains the same, it's Mr. Universe's zeal for public meetings. He'll gladly pose for photos and sign as many autographs as needed. Yet even this holds a different aura. The playful banter with fans involves less thank-yous and more bragging. The bright laughter sounds more like mocking chuckles, the beaming smiles look closer to knowing sneers. There's no more gratitude, only affirmation of what he already knows.
Of course you're here to see him. He's the star, and you're in his orbit. Come and bask in the light.
D - Don't Overheat On Me - Open to All
Every now and then, Mr. Universe needs to excuse himself. It comes at random moments: while eating, or in the middle of practicing instruments, or thirty seconds before autographs are actually supposed to get cut off. He'll walk off, not turning back for anything.
Looking like a diva is no concern to him. What he can't abide is the media catching sight of weakness. He feels that first twinge in the gut, a pang of something he can't quite place, and it sets his hands shaking. It always passes quickly, but not fast enough, and he hates it. Sometimes he retches, just to try and get the feeling out of his chest, but it never seems to help. Muttering curses at his hands does nothing to steady them.
What works best is when he gets himself someplace outside, where he can see the sky, breathe the air. Where there shouldn't be anyone around to see.
E - It's Only Chemical - DREAM
Dreams have become hazy and feverish. In all directions, landscapes waver in the distance: debris-strewn beaches, glowing spires piercing high to the clouds, barren craters flashing with lightning, a humble and broken down barn.
There's no way to tell how far away he is from any of the landmarks. All warp as though seen through a heat mirage, and are shrouded by the pinkish fog that swirls around him. A thin bubble is all that protects him from the choking mist, yet his chest already feels tight and strained from trying to breathe. He can't stay here, he needs to pick a direction and go, but still he dithers with labored breathing. They're not safe, none of those places will protect anything. But he won't suffocate there. Is that what matters right now?
There's not a lot of air left.
D - I WANNA RUIN OUR FRIENDSHIIIP
But something has happened to Greg, and he knows that much for certain. He's been listening to Defying Atmosphere's new track, hoping that their new angle will start sounding anything like his friend, but it doesn't. He can't stop thinking about it. He doesn't know what happened, but he's had a taste of so many things that could have.
For most of the appearance, it seems like Sans is going to end up just watching and then going home. Words are failing him, and his heart is too. It isn't until Greg cuts out early that Sans sees an opportunity he can't turn down.
He appears near where Greg has gone off too, his face partly concealed with a scarf and hood but no longer changed by a holo projector. He steps into sight, still limping with the damage caused to his right leg, and then freezes, staring.
He's got nothing.
HERE WE GO
Seeing who's there doesn't help. That sick pang in his chest gets worse, and he wants to throw up.
"You."
YOUR ONLY APPROPRIATE ICON NOW
But maybe that was before he'd been caught. That was a week ago, at least. A lot can happen in a week, and the idea of it terrifies Sans down to his core.
"Greg, I gotta get you outta here. Now."
no subject
He should take him out right now. This is a hand-picked moment to bring in the... the traitor. That's what he is. Except... Greg's the one who got him out of there in the first place, isn't he? So then, that's... that's not Sans' fault... but he's still working against Virgo. So the two of them are...?
The internal battle doesn't show on Mr. Universe's face, but his hands are shaking badly. He jabs one finger at the skeleton, his grimace equal parts anger and effort to keep the motion steady.
"I'm not going to warn you again. We're not on the same team anymore. Don't come to me expecting to get all buddy-buddy again, because I'm not making a habit of that anymore.

D (i'm so sorry for the teal deer)
Currently, he's in one of the city's many parks, after a long day of public appearances, and he can sense that feeling rolling off of someone nearby in an almost overwhelming wave. Whatever sort of ranking system is in play here, Jamie can tell he's outclassed; he should be wary, probably, but mostly he's curious, and a little excited. With barely a backward glance, he slips away from his handlers to go on the prowl.
He's so intent on finding the source that he all but collides with someone as he rounds a clump of bushes into a secluded corner of the park. "Oh, um, sorry, I should've been more...careful?"
He recognizes the hair before anything else; Mr. Universe's distinctive mane is hard to misplace. The guy looks like crap, though. His demeanor is distracting enough that Jamie almost doesn't realize he's the origin point of the feeling he's been tracking.
"Um - " he ventures again, hesitantly. "Are you - are you okay?"
It's a safer conversation starter than "I couldn't help but notice that your power level is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND," surely.
no subject
Usually he'd be furious that he was caught like this, in a moment he wanted, needed to be alone, to get his head on straight. That rage continues to boil, too. More importantly, is that he hasn't felt that amount of power from someone out of Pride yet. This little brat... he'd sensed some ability starting in him a long while back, whenever they last spoke, but he had never thought...
Mr. Universe straightens up, expression very cool, lip curled as he looks the teen up and down. So this is his competition, huh? "And what are you doing here?"
no subject
"Uh - just, promotional stuff for the tour, y'know?" Jamie shifts his weight uneasily; Mr. Universe's scrutiny of him, of his power, is disconcerting.
"Sorry if I'm bothering you, I just - I thought there was something...weird in the air, y'know?" He adds this in an undertone, peering up at the man pointedly. He can sense something too, Jamie's sure of it.
no subject
"What do you make of it, kid?" If Jamie's here to challenge him, Mr. Universe will meet it head on. This is lousy timing, but he's not someone who backs down for anything anymore. Besides, it'll be a good way to take out all this frustration.

D
Her gut and her sight were portending bad things. Some were crazy bad, as in is that even possible, but nevertheless, she can't shake the dread as she watches the interviews and concerts. Is...this how she'd been? Greg seemed to be even worse than she was. Great.
That made him coming outside unexpectedly more worrisome, while her new (and thankfully less annoying) agent and she were taking a few moments of break time. He didn't just look worried. He looked downright sick.
"Greg." She cut her agent off before he could finish the smart remark he started about Mr. Universe looking so 'down-to-earth'. (Mr. Universe abusing drugs? Affecting his performance? The agent is already tabulating possible tabloid leaks about it.) "Are you all right?"
She already knew the answer on some level. It was how he'd respond that she wasn't ready for no matter how many possibilities showed that it was not going to be a good conversation. She braced herself for whatever Greg was going to throw at her.

He shoves his shaking hands deep into his pockets, swallows down the illness, gives a casual toss of the hair. Garnet's given a smile that's more about showing teeth than anything remotely friendly, casual, or reassuring. She's his closest competitor on the opposing label, but he knows she hasn't got any actual Power. That thought should soothe him, right? That he can beat her in a fight?
Yeah. Totally.
"Positively bursting with joy. Don't let me interrupt your play date."
no subject
The agent, meanwhile, was just looking bemused and smug at Mr. Universe. He could think of one person especially who'd want to know about this...potential problem of the pompous little werewolf.
no subject
His gaze flickers to the agent, burning with a hard, wordless warning.

B - SORT OF, I GUESS
He's actually kind of been looking forward to the chance all month. If anything good is going to come out of all this hard work, it will be this. Being on good enough label terms that maybe he can see his dad for a while without his body guards hauling him back. He knows they've been suspicious ever since he was taken away the first time, but he done everything they told him to lately. He's been trying really hard.
He's been doing a lot better, he thinks, but then he has to wonder. On whose terms is he doing 'better'? Is it wrong that he's been trying so hard to play along and obey his captors, just so they'll let him have that little bit of happiness?
Sometimes he misses when he was sick. Despite everything, it has just been him and his dad, and for a while he hadn't felt nearly so alone. He's allowed to leave his room again, and he's allowed to write his music and hang out with Pinkie, Trucy, and Lapis... but sometimes he thinks he feels more trapped than ever.
The first shot he gets at encountering his dad is backstage during a series of TV interviews with various musicians. Greg already went - Steven was watching - and it's a while before he has his own interview slot. He doesn't really understand why 'Mr Universe' is acting different now, but he chalks it up to some kind of weird label media demand. He spend all his appearances trying to act like he's still Tiger Universe, so he understands.
Which means there is little holding him back from greeting Greg on very familiar terms the moment they have the opportunity. In a closed location there is less need for bodyguards to follow them constantly. It seems like the perfect opportunity.
"Hey, dad!" he calls in a stage whisper when he thinks they have a moment alone, running up an wrapping his arms around Greg's waist for a surprise hug. Greg must be feeling lonely recently, too.
no subject
Well, he knew this would happen sooner or later.
Mr. Universe reacts to the embrace with awkward discomfort. He shoots a furtive look around, just in case, before finally willing himself to touch the child and peel him off. He treated it with the slow discomfort of pulling off someone's pet tarantula.
"Kid. Uh."
He clears his throat.
"Don't call me that.
no subject
"U-Uh, I'm sorry!" he says, and then quiets down to a secretive hush. "I thought it would be okay since... well, nobody is really looking, and... they already know all this stuff, right...?"
He offers an uncertain smile.
no subject
He runs a hand over his face, and frowns down at the boy. Just the thought of how to go about this exhausts him preemptively. It shouldn't be hard, but kids get weird, and have trouble understanding. If the guy starts crying or something, it's gonna attract someone's attention.
"Look. This whole... thing. It's not gonna work for my image, okay?" He speaks slowly, hoping that will make it sink in better. "Baby daddy drama is weird enough, and I don't need age rumors on top of that. You get me?"

C: Don't mind him; just passing through. No, seriously, please don't mind him
Today's different. Today he stops cold near where Defying Atmosphere's latest publicity stop is. Today, something is wrong, more so than usual. Today, he hears Blanche there.
But that can't be - Blanche never leaves the tower, and the bass he's hearing is bad, but it's not enough to shake him apart from the inside out. It's not Blanche himself, he realizes slowly - it must be someone heavy under his influence. He leans against a wall, casual as he can manage, and sifts through the Music. Reimu and Marty are exhausted, still suffering from brainwashing damage, but steady. Meril is cold, somehow, but not suffused with the bass he's hearing. Greg-
There's nothing left of Greg.
His eyes widen slowly with that realization. That acoustic guitar he knows to be Greg's tune - the tune he memorized, the tune he fixed himself only a few weeks back - is gone. There's no trace of it. In its place is that awful static and warping and Blanche's bass-
He'd heard the new Defying Atmosphere single more times than he'd like to think about. It hadn't sounded anything like them, but he'd thought it was just a media stunt. Now, if Blanche has torn Greg's tune up so badly that he's not even Greg anymore...
What else can Blanche do that J doesn't know about? How bad does it get? He can help with brainwashing, yes, but he can't fix this - there's nothing there to fix. There's nothing left of the simple, sweet acoustic guitar that was the expression of everything that made Greg, Greg. There's nothing left of Greg's soul-
J doesn't know when he started shaking. All he knows is he has to get out of there, away from the label-produced music that drags at him and the tune he can't touch. He has enough of his wits about him to sneak out, keep his head low until he gets back to the apartment, but aside from that...
He doesn't know what to do. Not anymore.
C
To that end, she arrives at a public autograph session, putting the holographic projector she's managed to get from Silver to good use to disguise herself. When she approaches Greg's table, he'll see a dark-skinned, blonde woman wearing a sundress, a wide-brimmed sunhat, and a smile. She also does her best to disguise her voice - how does Twilight Sparkle talk when she's excited? "It's so nice to meet you!" she chirps. "I'm your biggest fan!"
no subject
"I'd expect nothing less." He clicks his tongue and shoots a fingergun at her. Even the fans behind her in the line start giggling. Everyone just eats it up. "So what can I sign for you, Number One?"
no subject
"Oh! I have a picture right here." She fiddles with the clasp on her bag - hopefully her clumsy fingers can be attributed to nerves and not the fact that her hands haven't felt right in weeks - and finally manages to remove the photo. It's a publicity shot from months ago, picturing Greg and Meril with several people she doesn't recognize - people that had come and gone before she arrived. "I've always been a fan of your early sound," she lies by way of explanation. This photo was the result of several hours of scouring record shops - it is not an accident.
no subject
"Been a while since I saw one of these." It's only been a few months, but it's the truth; Virgo spin doctors all but erased the images of the lost band members to hype up the pair remaining. Only the most stubborn corners of fan forums kept complaining about the new lineup in comparison to the old.
After a calculated moment of silence he figures an appropriate length of time for refliction, Mr. Universe scrawls his star-laden signature over the photo. "Hope the new direction doesn't scare you off."

D? um if you're okay with more heartbreak ahaha
Doctor had been told to take it easy and avoid most of the events in case Virgo's programming tried to pull him back yet again but he decided it was worth risking it to quickly check on Greg. If only they had been able to take him along... Seeing Greg looking so exhausted and unlike himself has him regretting all over again that he left without him. ]
always
It's strong, and obvious. He's only felt it from a spare few on both sides of the labels, at least among those who have been here around the same time. He's even made some small effort to remember the faces from higher up the chain, where relevant. But this guy...
Mr. Universe clenches his hands, instantly on edge and suspicious, making no move to take the water bottle. ]
Who the hell're you supposed to be?
no subject
Your friend in disguise. You could say I'm supposed to be a ghost, according to Virgo.
I've been worried about you. Has Blanche revealed anything about the real reasons behind this World Tour?
